White Ribbon supports Metro’s This is Not Right campaign

White Ribbon UK is supporting the Metro’s new This is Not right campaign, launched on 25th November, White Ribbon Day which coincides with the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Metro’s This is Not Right campaign will span over the next 12 months, addressing the epidemic of violence against women, aiming to increase awareness and understanding of its readers, as well as highlight how they can make a difference.

On 25th November, Metro published an article titled ‘Men – we need your help to end violence against women’. The article focuses on engaging men to better understand the issue and understand what they can do to be allies to women and girls.

Part of the article reads: “Because it is true that not all men will commit violence against women, but all men have a role to play in bringing about the end of this emergency.”

Anthea Sully, CEO of White Ribbon UK, said: “As the global symbol for ending men’s violence against women and girls, it’s important that the White Ribbon is visible and raises awareness of the importance of preventing violence against women and girls across society.

“The work that Metro has committed to doing in paying close attention to the way they report violence against women and girls is really important and contributes to a shift in understanding about the responsibility every single person, especially men and boys, have in creating a world where women and girls can live free from the fear of and of violence.

“By positively engaging male readers, we can provide space where they can better understand the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence on women and girls and learn strategies to become allies.”

Metro’s campaign has been endorsed by several organisations in the ending violence against women and girls sector, including Women’s Aid, Refuge, White Ribbon, Killed Women, EVAW, Woman’s Trust and The Circle.
