Night time run highlights dangers to women

Defending the “rawest form of freedom”, White Ribbon fundraiser ran through the night to raise awareness about women’s safety.

Caitlin Millar has completed an impressive challenge of walking and running through the night to raise awareness about women’s safety at night.

From 19:30 to 06:30, covering a total distance of 61 kilometres, Caitlin ran through Greenham Common near Newbury. Starting at sunset, Caitlin was accompanied by a support throughout the challenge.

“If you think ‘what a stupid and dangerous thing to do’ then you have hit the nail on the head. Running is the rawest form of freedom, and I want to everyone to be able to run without fear,” says Caitlin.

The 2021 National Survey by Women’s Running found that 69% of women do not feel safe or have adjusted their behaviour to feel safe when they run. One-third of women have considered stopping running entirely due to safety concerns.

During the winter lockdown Caitlin was able to run again for the first time in six months after knee surgery and extensive rehab. But her excitement was overshadowed by the prospect of having to run alone, at a slower pace, and in the dark before or after work. Caitlin describes being repeatedly heckled and intimidated whilst running since she first started training at 12 years old. Coupled with recent events highlighting the widespread experiences of sexual harassment and violence against women, she felt compelled to act.

Caitlin chose to run for White Ribbon UK because she feels that the root of the issue lies in education and respectful conduct, and that our work engaging with men and boys, facilitates sustainable social change.
