highlights from white ribbon day

25 NOVEMBER 2022

In 2022, White Ribbon Day fell on the same week as the start of the FIFA men’s World Cup.

Our campaign highlighted 11 traits — one for each player on a football team — men and boys can nurture to help create a world of equality and safety for women.

What #TheGoal campaign aims to achieve goes well beyond the football pitch. Watch our Highlights video from White Ribbon Day 2022.

#THEGOAL

Our focus with #TheGoal campaign is to raise awareness about the challenges — and dangers — women and girls face in traditionally male-dominated contexts like the football pitch, but also public transportation.

As football fans all over the UK commute to and from matches over the weeks to follow 25 November, we are bringing #TheGoal to stations across England and Wales in order to highlight how fellow passengers and train companies can foster the 11 traits on their commutes and within their work environments.

Together we can unite on White Ribbon Day, 25th November, to work towards ending violence against women and girls and achieve #TheGoal. Plan now to mark White Ribbon Day in your workplace, school, sports club, local pub and bars, and communities:

11 TRAITS

There has never been a better time for us to come together and start playing as a team to end men’s violence against women and girls.

To commemorate White Ribbon Day this year, which coincides with the start of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we've identified 11 traits, one for each player on a football team, each of us can strive to incorporate into our daily lives in support of women and girls.

Whether you're a football fan or not, we want to encourage everyone to work together to achieve gender equality by embodying the following 11 traits:

  • ALLY

  • CARING

  • EMPATHETIC

  • COURAGEOUS

  • GENTLE

  • RESILIENT

  • RELIABLE

  • HOPEFUL

  • PRINCIPLED

  • REFLECTIVE

  • SUPPORTIVE

If everyone were to focus on cultivating these traits, we believe existing harmful cultures would transform to become spaces where women and girls not only feel supported, but are free to thrive.

  • It’s simple. We asked men and boys what attributes they believed were most important when it comes to ending violence against women and girls. The collaboration was led by Dr. Stephen Burrell, a prominent researcher on masculinity and violence and White Ribbon UK Trustee. We consulted a group of men to each select eleven words from a list compiled by Dr. Burrell with 70+ traits. The resulting eleven traits reflect those that were most commonly selected by this group.
