Men need to play their part in reducing violence as calls to domestic abuse helplines increase in lockdown
With calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline increasing by 25% during lockdown, White Ribbon UK, is calling on all men to take responsibility for their behaviour as well as influence their friends.
Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK said today,
“We are asking all men to consider their own behaviour whilst in lockdown and to think about how they are relating to those around them. Men should be considering if anything that their friends has said has given any cause for concern or made them feel uncomfortable, including what they are circulating on social networks. This may include jokes that seem to excuse violence. In the current climate it is more important than ever to challenge behaviour that you don’t feel is acceptable if you feel it is safe to do so. If you are at all worried about the wellbeing and safety of someone, such as your friend’s partner, don’t hesitate about calling the police”.
White Ribbon UK is asking all men to raise awareness of violence against women by wearing a White Ribbon when they are taking part in video conference calls. Wearing a White Ribbon shows that you have promised to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. Showing your support for the White Ribbon campaign in video meetings can enable important conversations to take place.
During the coronavirus crisis, many in lockdown are feeling isolated, stressed out and under pressure. This survival kit has been developed by various European organisations who work with men and boys: Corona Crisis: Survival Kit for Men under pressure.
